Abstract: The facade fulfils important functions as protection against sun and heat. It has a big influence on energy demand and comfort. But when works a sun protection efficiently? Does a lower u-value really reduce the yearly energy consumption? Answers to these and other questions can be found by building simulations. Hereby the gains and the costs depend a lot on the experience of the user. In addition to the daily practical experience, a sufficient theoretical experience with the used models is at least as important. The building simulation specialist gets his experience e.g. by comparisons of the simulation results with sufficiently accurate experimental measurements. To test the performance of calculation models for daylighting and shading processes, such a validation is currently in progress on the occasion of the IEA task 34 / annex 43 of the Solar Heating and Cooling program.
