Abstract: The holistic evaluation of the ecological impact of a building on the environment is based on the consideration of pollutants emitted during the construction, maintenance, refurbishment and demolition phases of the building and accordingly goes beyond the purely energetic view. In order to draw up a viable estimate of the ecological costs in early stages of the design process, it is necessary to develop computer-aided methods that can be easily integrated into the planning process. We describe a product model-based approach that takes the individual emissions of building components into account. The relevant data are accessed from a central type catalogue provided by an internet database server for monitoring pollution in terms of mass. To calculate the environmental contamination arising during the utilization phase, a special building information model has been developed in combination with the HVAC system, which allows the user to read off dynamic specific values directly and to optimize the layout of the installation based on the received information.
