Computational Fluid Dynamics mit Open-Source-Software Reif für die Hochschule? – Reif für die Praxis?

Abstract: CFD-software (Computational Fluid Dynamics) is well-suited to analyze a lot of questions concerning buildings. The main obstacle for a broader use of this method is the high training effort until a user has sufficient expertise for reliable simulations as well as the high price of the leading CFD-products. A solution for at least the last topic could be provided by an open source and free of charge available CFD software, which has been around for half a decade. In a diploma-thesis it had been investigated whether this simulation-tool is already suitable for practical application today. Calculations were compared with a validated case that had been simulated with commercial software. Additionally a practical application example had been carried out from geometry creation over grid-generation and computation to the presentation of results. The fundamental suitability of the software for practical application could be found, and disadvantages, as well as advantages over commercially available CFD software had been investigated.
