Abstract: Building Energy Simulation models must be tested before their productive use to eliminate model errors and to make statements regarding the computation accuracy. Guideline 6020, part 1 of the German Association of Engineers describes a set of such benchmark cases. These benchmaks enable the validation of software by the calculation of reaction of a sample area to internal loads and setpoint changes, for the consideration of solar radiation and for a whole year building performance simulation. In this article, the guideline is used for the validation of two different calculation models for building energy simulation. In some cases it can be shown that both models provide reasonable results in terms of computational accuracy. However, other cases show discrepancies compared to the benchmark data. This behavior was clarified by conducting a series of different calculations and variations ("try and error"). In the opinion of the authors, the guideline is therefore only partially useful for the validation of building performance simulation models. Missing or unclear input data prevent a continuous consistent application of the standard. The article discusses the performance of validation calculations and critically reviews parts of the guideline.
