Abstract: As a value for rating the energetic behaviour of building components, the coefficient of heat transfer (U-value) is well established, and at least for opaque building parts this value offers a possibility to rate and compare their transmission heat losses. To describe the energetic performance of windows and other transparent building parts, at least one more value is used: the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC, g-value). This value describes the effective thermal portion of outer solar radiation that enters the building. Because the usability of the total solar load as a solar gain to reduce heating energy demand is strongly dependant on building specific parameters such as the window-fraction or the thermal capacity, the U-value and the g-value together are not sufficient to derive statements on the energetic performance of windows. A part of this project is the development of a simplified method for rating the energetic behaviour of windows in residential buildings. Herein not only the energy balance during the heating period is considered, but also the behaviour of the facade and roof windows during the summer months are important aspects of the examination.
