Integration of aquifer thermal energy systems (ATES) into virtual power plant as a source of flexibility

B. Bozkaya, W. Zeiler, G. Boxem

Abstract: Rapid deployment of distributed energy resources (DER) has changed traditional billing system into dynamic pricing due to the fluctuations in power generation. Virtual power plant (VPP) concept has emerged to take full economic benefit of electricity market and enhancing reliability of electricity system by aggregating the capacity of storage and controllable technologies. It also add flexibility into energy use. Imbalances between demand and supply due to the prediction error in electricity market is inevitable and remained as a problem for end user in VPP concept. On the one hand, there is a penalty for imbalances, on the other hand, there is additional operational cost for the compensation. In this study, the future prospects of aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) has been investigated under the control of multiagent system (MAS). Restrictions and capabilities of ATES have been introduced correspondingly. 1.
