Simulation and validation of thermal air stratification in living spaces

Abstract: Standard simulation tools for calculating the building energy demand assume a single homogenous zone model for the simulation. To most extends, this simplification produces valid simulation results. Seldom, but not negligible situations like big halls or atriums can produce wrong simulation results. A new simulation algorithm is tested against standard simulation methods in a modeled living space with a vaulted ceiling. The gained values appear like CFD results. Nevertheless, these results where produced with a non-CFD approach which is able to generate annual transient data with low computational power. The results are compared with real measurements of the modeled apartment. Simulation and reality match to a high extend and hereby validate the new simulation approach.
