Abstract: As part of the accompanying research to the cor- responding research initiative ENERGIEWENDEBAUEN, more than 900 re- search projects are analyzed with respect to var- ious topics. The so-called scientific cross-sec- tional research is a methodology for the analysis of research projects on superordinate level. The results provide insights into national research pri- orities. The initiative focusses on research pro- jects around the topic of energy in buildings and city quarters. The research projects should ena- ble the development of software-based solutions and the application of digital tools in this case. In addition to a clear terminological distinction, the cross-cutting relevance of software development in the context of research projects, a typology of software-based approaches, a trend towards multi-scale modeling, the programming imple- mentation, licensing models and the digital eco- system of applications are discussed within this work.
