FLEXIBLE OFFICE BUILDINGS -THE EFFECT OF SPACE LAYOUT DESIGN AND ZONING STRATEGIES ON THERMAL COMFORT AND ENERGY DEMAND

J. Gartner, F. Gray, T. Auer

Abstract: In this paper, the authors investigate the effect of space layout design and control zoning strategies on thermal comfort and energy demand in flexible office buildings. To support design decisions and create optimal working environments, different HVAC-system control zoning strategies are evaluated for a flexible space layout design. The main finding is that different space layout designs and control zoning strategies significantly impact both thermal comfort and energy demand. Moreover, the level of granularity at which thermal comfort is evaluated is identified as highly relevant when designing new space layouts.
