SIMULATION, VALIDATION AND OPTIMIZATION OF PCM-CHILLED CEILINGS

Abstract: Chilled ceilings with incorporated phase change materials (PCM) are installed in the Energy Effi ciency Center-the new R&D building of the ZAE Bayern in Wurzburg. Since 2014 these ceilings have been subjected to extensive monitoring. Special measurements on weekends without user influence have been carried out to determine the system's performance. Simulations are an im portant tool to optimize the building automation system and allow the evaluation of different meth ods for producing the cold needed to recharge the phase change materials. This paper presents a simulation model of the monitored rooms based on the building simulation program TRNSYS. The real life data acquired by monitoring serve for the validation of the simulation model. The validated model was then used to optimize operation strat egies regarding PCM regeneration, chilled ceiling construction and supply temperature of the chilled ceiling. The benchmark for the optimiza tion is a conventional chilled ceiling.
