Abstract: Passive cooling through natural ventilation air flow is particularly relevant in multi-storey residential buildings. This paper investigates the role of natural ventilation in the verification of the overheating compliance of a dwelling. Five different zones are calculated with the ÖNORM method “Determination of the operating temperature in summer”. In comparison, a thermal-dynamic simulation is conducted for each zone to display the boundary conditions as realistic as possible. Natural ventilation air flow seems underrepresented in the ÖNORM method, as for example patch airing does not play a role at all. Therefore, the results from the simulation differ.
