In this paper, a novel thermal storage concept for residential buildings will be proposed and analyzed. The storage concept is based on metal hydrides, which are integrated into the heating and domestic hot water system. To investigate the system efficiency a dynamic simulation model was developed within the simulation environment TRNSYS 17. The model ensures the thermodynamically equilibrium constraints and considers the reaction kinetics of the selected metal hydrides. Based on the simulation model the following findings were determined: • Required storage capacity and necessary storage volume for the metal hydride systems when thermal solar systems are used • Impact of the reaction kinetics on the operation performance and on the required amount of metal hydride Finally, the effect of additive phase change material (acetamide) on auxiliary electrical energy and solar coverage was examined.
