Abstract: Early optimization minimizes the energy loads and thus reduces the buildings energy demand. However, model-driven simulation and optimization in the early planning phases poses several challenges, like responsibility for parameter values, exchange format and exchange requirements. In a BIM2BEM (Building Information Modelling to Building Energy Modeling) workflow, the simulation tool sets the requirements for the exchange. Properties must be defined, mapped between different tools, and then imported in such a way that they can be used on both sides. However, mostly there is a lack of information for a simulation workflow, because of missing data and problems with interoperability. Furthermore, the question of the responsibility of simulations, i.e. the input data used for the simulation, has not been clarified. As part of BIM2BEM-Flow a combined “web-based and BIM tool plugin” toolchain was developed to support all involved stakeholders in the organization and management of exchange requirements between BIM and external simulation tools. The tools are designed to define and manage parameters, coordinate exchange requirements between BIM and simulation tools and facilitate full implementation in BIM. The parameters are already defined in such a way that they contain all the necessary information for a BIM2BEM workflow. The results of the BIM2BEM-Flow project are presented in the following article.
