Thermal Storage Options for Solar Heated Buildings

Abstract: For solar heated buildings, the mismatch between supply and demand of heat generally requires shortterm and seasonal thermal storage. District energy networks can be used to connect individual buildings with thermal storage systems. This paper assesses the technical feasibility and the economic viability of this type of system with two possible thermal storage options. Cost of heat for both options are shown to be modest, though higher than for individual natural gas furnaces. Depending on carbon taxes optimal solar fractions for the system can be determined. Weather forecasting has been shown to help to improve economic viability of these systems.
