Inverse modelling for the assessment of energy performance: Estimation of envelope thermal characteristics

Abstract: The overall dynamic properties of building envelopes are among the most influencing factors of building performance. In order to assess accurately the overall performance of a building it is necessary to assess with good accuracy these characteristics in situ. This means that the test protocol has to be carried out under non controlled weather and usage conditions that induce unknown thermal loading on the wall under test. We present a methodology able to address this issue based only on standard temperature measurements. The approach consists in trying to identify all-at-once both the sought parameters and the unknown thermal loadings. The problem is set as an non-linear optimization problem.
