Adjustment of Hydronic Systems in Central Cooling/Heating Plants to Reduce Pump Electricity Consumption

Abstract: In the present paper, we propose a procedure for balancing primary and secondary pumps in hydronic systems in central cooling/heating plants. This procedure is easy to introduce and contribute to a reduction in the power consumption of the pumps. For this purpose, we perform experiments and investigate the effects of adjusting the parameters, such as the opening of the balancing valves and the differential pressure set-point. In addition, we construct a pipe-network calculation module in order to implement into the TRNSYS programming tool, and carry out a simulation study to introduce a recommended balancing procedure, the effects of which are verified by performing virtual balancing through a simulation.
