Abstract: Numerical results of a n ew simplified model are compared to those of a detailed model for horizontal, liquid-based latent energy storage tanks filled with encapsulated PCMs of rectangular geometry. The simplified model is implemented as a T RNSYS component and the detailed model is built in COMSOL Multiphysics. Numerical results are compared to establish the consistency of the dynamic behaviour established from each model. Results indicate that the simplified model is capable of predicting the dynamic performance of this type of latent energy storage tank with reasonable accuracy in comparison to the detailed model. The validity of the assumptions made in the simplified model is confirmed. Some limitations associated with the use of such a model instead of a more physically accurate and computationally-intensive model are examined.
