The calculation of the projected sunlit surface fraction is therefore an indispensable prerequisite for running a meaningful simulation. It consists of at least two major steps. One is to solve the visibility problem of all surfaces of the building that is investigated. This means to set up an order in which one surface may cast a shadow on another. The other step is to calculate the projected sunlit surface fraction based on the order obtained in the first step. There are basically two technologies to address both problems. One is based on OpenGL and the other one on polygon clipping algorithms. The paper at hand will outline a polygon-based implementation and give the pros and cons compared with an OpenGLbased implementation. Pages: 403 - 410 Paper:![]()
