Abstract: This paper presents a method of determining the validity of simplified models for use in predictive control. As opposed to traditional statistical measures, a comparison of the model predictive control (MPC) performance of a high-fidelity model is used as the baseline for comparison. A single modelling technique is tested against several buildings in different climates to show the application of the tool. The savings achieved with the simplified model range from 84% to 101% of the high-fidelity model savings, based on climate and building type.
