Automated Design and Model Generation for a District Heating Network from OpenStreetMap Data

Abstract: Despite the context of fast-changing energy systems that require flexibility and dynamic operation, stateof-the-art district heating models often rely on static analyses. To contribute towards advancing the capabilities of district heating design for current and future challenges, this paper presents a framework for automating the generation of static as well as dynamic district heating system models. To illustrate the application of this framework, we present a case study in which the developed framework automatically designs a district heating network for 250 buildings using data input from OpenStreetMap and generates a static system model that is simulated in Python as well as a dynamic system model that is simulated in Modelica.
