Predicting the Effectiveness of Wind-Driven Natural Ventilation Strategy for Interactive Building Design

Abstract: While an early stage design is highly likely to be changed, conducting natural ventilation simulations for various design alternatives can be challenging given the considerable effort required to run one simulation. The goal of this study, therefore, is to provide useful feedback for those who conduct energy simulations with an interest in natural ventilation. This study uses existing simulation software and 3D modeling tools to inform users of the natural ventilation effectiveness (NVE) of their design. The study first introduces the process of the simulation, and then demonstrates the integrated 3D modeling in Rhinoceros. The proposed simulation yields the values and maps of the NVE, and helps decide possible design alterations.
