The charging/discharging of the PCM, arranged in layers in a heat exchanger, is done through a controlled air stream passing through these layers. First, the effect of airflow rate on charging/discharging time is investigated. Then, different control strategies targeting reduction in peak demand and HVAC system sizing are evaluated. Results show that for the present case-study 14% reduction in energy consumption and 10% enhanced energy flexibility could be achieved using the PCM heat exchanger (PCM-HX) for free cooling.
