Performance of aerogels as thermal insulation materials for buildings in tropical climates

Abstract: Nearly 40% of global energy consumption is covered by the building sector and a large proportion of this consumption goes to providing thermal comfort. Energy efficiency measures through the adoption of insulation materials like aerogels are tools that affect the heat gain and loss within buildings thereby reducing energy demand. This article presents a study on the performance of aerogels on wall surfaces of buildings in the tropical regions of Nigeria, and Brazil. The findings of the study showed that aerogel has significant potential with respect to both thermal comfort improvement and energy consumption reduction in the selected locations.
