An Open Science Approach for Building Performance Data Schemas and Analysis Algorithms

Steven K Firth, Gareth Cole, Tom Kane, Farid Fouchal, Tarek M Hassan

Abstract: Open Science is the process of carrying out scientific research in an open, public, reproducible and reusable manner. It is increasingly viewed by researchers, publishers and funders as a priority for the collaboration and advancement of scientific disciplines. This paper presents two Open Science methods for building performance studies: i) an Open Data method for storing building performance datasets using a data schema containing building survey information and sensor measurements; and ii) an Open Methodology approach for building performance analysis algorithms using the Jupyter Notebook tool. These methods are demonstrated using the REFIT Smart Home Dataset (DOI:10.17028/rd.lboro.2070091.v1), an open-access building performance dataset of 20 UK homes.
