COMPARISON OF TOOLS FOR DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE PREDICTION OF PASSIVE DESIGN ELEMENTS
COMPARISON OF TOOLS FOR DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE PREDICTION OF PASSIVE DESIGN ELEMENTS
Derek Whitehead, Duncan Phillips, Vadim Mezhibovski, Meiring Beyers, Andrea FrisqueAbstract: In the present paper the design process for a number of passive design features is described-daylighting, passive solar heating, natural ventilation using a solar chimney, and a double shell roof-is described from both a technical perspective and the aspect of integration with the design team. Example results from different tools are shown and interpreted. The limitations of different simulation approaches are explained. It is shown how the different parts of the engineering analyses complement each other and work together toward high design confidence. It is discussed how the results of the engineering studies are used to inform the design team and help them make informed decisions. On each project this is always a mutual learning and understanding process of the design goals and the technical possibilities and risks. Pages: 181 - 188 Paper:![]()
