Optimization of a Residential Solar Combisystem for Minimum Life Cycle Energy and Cost

Jason Ng, Cheng Hin, Radu Zmeureanu

Abstract: This paper presents the optimal configurations of a combisystem in terms of life cycle energy and cost given the Canadian climate, equipment, and energy costs. Additionally, the paper presents the effectiveness of certain optimization techniques when they are applied to solar combisystems. The transient simulation software TRNSYS is used with a model of an energy efficient house in Montreal that is equipped with a solar combisystem. A hybrid particle swarm and Hooke-Jeeves optimization algorithm is used to determine the optimal configuration of the solar combisystem. Two separate objective functions are used to find two separate optimal configurations in terms of life cycle cost and life cycle energy.
