Multi-objective life cycle optimization of a single-family house envelope

Abstract: This paper presents the optimization of a single-family house envelope, using two objective functions, the life cycle primary energy use (LCE) and cost (LCC). The methodology is applied to a proposed design of a house from a modular housing company. A dynamic simulation model is created in TRNSYS, to simulate the annual heating and cooling energy consumption for the climate of Ste-Agathe-des-Monts, Québec. The Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm available in GenOpt optimization software is used. The results show that the optimum insulation level, obtained either from the life cycle energy use or the life cycle cost, is greater than those values recommended by the energy efficient building regulation in Quebec. A high potential for improvement of the initial design of the house is found when compared to the optimum solutions.
