Simulation approaches to smart solar communities

Abstract: Community energy planning requires detailed consideration of tradeoffs at the building and community energy system level. As a first step, the evaluation of district energy systems requires hourly or subhourly profiles of building consumption. Energy modelling is a timeconsuming process so methodologies which streamline these efforts are beneficial in expediting solar community design. This paper proposes a three stage approach which includes early energy estimates, detailed energy models and economic optimization. To quickly build energy models, geometry is created using a SketchUp interface. Various modelling best practices and technologies are programmed using a scripting methodology with EnergyPlus.
