Abstract: The greenhouse, as an agricultural building structure, is necessary for cold regions. It can provide desired environment for local plant cultivation, which increase the supply of local fresh food and the extent of food security. In this paper, a general modelling method has been developed for predicting the performance of a conceptual greenhouse design in cold regions. The greenhouse is divided into typical unit areas for modelling to facilitate the modelling of greenhouse in different sizes. The energy balance equations including that for the plants are built to find the temperatures of different greenhouse components. The weather data of a typical cold days of Edmonton, Canada was used. Using this model, a greenhouse design has been improved to increase the solar heat gain during winter significantly. In the meantime, the heat gain from the lighting system increased while the heat loss of the whole day decreased.
