Predicting the thermal performance of a sand-based seasonal thermal storage
Rebecca Ingrid Pinto, Ian Beausoleil-MorrisonCarleton University, CanadaAbstract: A two-storey research house that represents a typical Canadian home has been built and equipped with a solar thermal system and underground seasonal sand thermal storage. A 3-D finite difference model of the heat transfer in the sand storage has been developed and the simulation’s results are compared to experimental data in order to refine and partially validate the model.
The experimental data shows that the underground seasonal storage is cooling approximately twice as fast as predicted by the numerical model. Analysis of the experimental data has led to a hypothesis for the rapid heat loss and recommendations to adapt the numerical model to better predict the experimental data.
