Characterizing heating energy for residential and commercial buildings in Canada’s remote communities
Sarah Brown, Julia Purdy, Galen Richardson, Ian Maynard, Sébastien Brideau, Alex FergusonNatural Resources Canada (NRCan)Abstract: A critical part of Canada's energy transition planning involves quantifying diesel and heavy fuel oil consumption for heating buildings in Canada's remote communities. With 140 communities in scope and limited data availability on buildings in remote communities, getting a defensible number for actual building stock consumption is a challenge. This paper presents a novel procedure that combines BPS tool outputs, publicly available data sources, and regression modelling to predict residential and CII heating energy. Comparison of modelled annual energy consumption with community energy plans underscores the effectiveness of this procedure for most of Canada's remote communities but also highlights that outlier communities (particularly urban communities, exceptionally populated communities, etc.) fail to be properly captured.
