Investigating the Impact of Cost-Based and Carbon-Based Renewable Energy Generation and Storage Sizing Strategies on Carbon Emissions for All-Electric Buildings
Rushil Desai, Shivani Shah, Shreshth NagpalAtelier Ten, New York, NY Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MAAbstract: Current renewable energy system, and storage, sizing and optimization designs typically focus on technoeconomic modeling. This paper proposes sizing and optimization based on greenhouse gas emissions as a metric as opposed to energy costs, as a method more in line with the intent of installing grid-integrated clean energy systems. Using a combination of simple energy models and results derived from a spreadsheet based tool, the authors discuss the benefits and limitations of both approaches, and the applicability of each in present as well as future scenarios.
